Things to Know Before Booking a Pilgrimage Tour in Nepal

1. Respect for Sacred Sites

  • Dress modestly—cover shoulders and knees, especially at temples and monasteries.
  • Remove your shoes before entering temples.
  • Photography may be restricted in certain shrines—always ask your guide or check signs.

2. Altitude Awareness

  • Some pilgrimage sites, like Muktinath (3,800m) and Gosaikunda (4,380m), are located at high altitudes.
  • Acclimatisation is not always possible on short tours—consult your doctor if you have respiratory or heart issues.
  • Carry medication if prone to altitude sickness (consult your physician).

3. Weather & Season

  • Best travel periods: March–May and September–December (clear skies, comfortable temps).
  • Monsoon (June–August) is not ideal for mountain regions due to landslides and flight delays.

4. Flight Reliability

  • Mountain flights (e.g., Kathmandu to Jomsom or Taplejung) are weather-dependent.
  • Delays or cancellations are common—consider adding buffer days or opting for helicopter alternatives.

5. Local Currency & Payments

  • Carry sufficient Nepali rupees, especially when travelling to remote areas like Jomsom or Janakpur.
  • ATMs are available in cities, but not in high mountain villages.
  • Tips for guides and drivers are appreciated (USD or NPR).

6. Permits & Documentation

  • TIMS cards or Restricted Area Permits may be required for some temple regions.
  • Your tour operator (like Osho World Adventure) usually handles all permits.
  • Indian nationals don’t need a visa; others must obtain a Nepal visa (available on arrival).

7. Helicopter Options Available

  • For those short on time or with elderly travellers, helicopter darshan to Muktinath or Gosaikunda is available.
  • Book early and expect costs to vary based on the number of passengers and the weather.

8. Food & Accommodation

  • Most pilgrimage routes offer basic but clean hotels or guesthouses with vegetarian options.
  • Meals may not always be spicy or South Indian-styled—inform your guide about food preferences in advance.

9. Cultural Sensitivity

  • Be respectful of local customs—greetings like “Namaste” are appreciated.
  • Avoid loud behaviour at spiritual sites.
  • Don’t point your feet toward shrines or idols.

10. Travel Insurance (Recommended)

  • For helicopter rescues or high-altitude visits, travel insurance is strongly advised.
  • Choose a policy that covers medical emergencies and trip cancellations due to weather.

What do I need to bring?

  • Valid Passport & ID
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Warm jacket & layers (especially for high altitudes)
  • Modest clothing (cover shoulders/knees for temple visits)
  • Sunhat, sunglasses & sunscreen
  • Personal medication & first aid
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Camera or phone (with charger/power bank)
  • Scarf or shawl for temple use
  • Cash in Nepali rupees (for donations, tips, or small buys)
