Details Itinerary

Day 01: Bhaktapur. Exploration of Bhaktapur Durbar Square and surrounding archaeological and religious site and the most ancient Hindu temple, Changu Narayan.

9:00-10:00am: We will drive to Bhaktapur, a world heritage site. Also known as the town of the devotees, Bhaktapur is rich in medieval arts, architecture, culture, and lifestyle. We will visit the pottery square, Bhaktapur durbar square, museums and temples.

We will visit the following sites in Bhaktapur.

Bhaktapur Durbar Square:

Bhaktapur Durbar Square has as its main attraction 55-window Palace which was constructed by King Jitamitra Malla and was home to royalty until 1769. Close by is the Golden Gate which leads into Mulchok Court and Taleju Temple. This temple, like others in the main towns of the Kathmandu Valley, is dedicated to the goddess Taleju Bhawani and includes shrines to both the Taleju Bhawani and Kumari..

Erotic elephant temple:

The Erotic elephant temple consist of erotic artworks and carvings on its struts. Among the series of copulating animals are elephants in the missionary position with their trunks entwined in pleasure! It’s a hathi (elephant) Kamasutra.

King Bhupatindra Malla’s Column:

King Bhupatindra Malla was the best known Malla kings of Bhaktapur and had a great influence on the art and architecture of the town. The king sits with folded arms, studying the magnificent golden gate to his palace.

Ugrachandi Bhairab Statue:

We can see two large stone lines built by King Bhupatindra while entering the Durbar Square. On the northern wall you can find the terrible statues of Bhairab and equally terrible Ugrachandi Durga. Durga is regarded as the fearsome manifestation of Shiva’s consort Parvati. The statue, built in about 1701, has 18 arms holding various tantric weapons and symbols. She is in the act of casually killing a demon with a trident whereas the Bhairab has 12 arms.

Nyatapola Temple:

This five-storeyed pagoda was built by King Bhupatindra Malla in 1702 A.D. It stands on five terraces, on each of which squat a pair of figures: two famous wrestlers, two elephants, two lions, two griffins, and Baghini and Singhini — the tiger and the lion goddesses. Each pair of figures is considered ten times stronger than the ones immediately below, while the lowest pair, the two strong men Jaya Malla and Phatta Malla, were reputedly ten times stronger than any other men. This is one of the tallest pagoda-style temples in Kathmandu Valley and is famous for its massive structure and subtle workmanship.

12.30-1.30pm: Lunch in a restaurant in Bhaktapur.

2:00pm: After lunch we will continue our journey towards Changu Narayan, another World Heritage Site. According to the stone inscription found in the site, Changu Narayan is the oldest temple in the Kathmandu valley.
